World Title for Caboolture Hot Shots
Husband and wife team Lorraine and Nigel Hughes from Caboolture Clay Target Club recently returned from participating in the World Skeet championships held in San Antonio Texas where they were successful in bringing home a total of 20 medals between them including a world Championship title for Nigel in the 20 gauge event.
“This was our first trip to the world championships and we both went with realistic expectations and so we were delighted to find ourselves shooting so well and mixing it with the worlds best” said Nigel who like his wife only took up the sport 5 years ago.
‘We travelled with a party of 19 Australian skeet shooters from all states with 6 of us from the Brisbane area and the great thing was that although we are competing against each other we all encouraged and supported each other throughout the competition which was really terrific and we believe we did Australia (and Caboolture) proud ‘said Nigel who is a previous Queensland title holder whose wife Lorraine is the current Australian ladies skeet champion, a title she has won for the last three years.
“Many people think that this sport is only for men but I can assure you it is a sport that women can participate in as well and you don’t have to be big and tall to do it, I am only 160cm tall and If I can do it anybody can said Lorraine” In San Antonio Lorraine was the winner of a Silver medal in the 28 gauge event after shooting a personal best of 99 out of 100 targets to qualify for the final “It was great to make the final but I was disappointed not to have taken the Gold especially as the guy who won was a Kiwi” says Lorraine laughing ‘But at least I beat Nigel who was only 1 target behind me and won the Bronze…”
Nigel and Lorraine are members of Caboolture Clay Target Club www.cctc.com.au where they train and compete regularly.
